Ranger Rodeo Rider Dakota Smith Excels at CNFR in Casper

CASPER, Wyo. — Dakota Smith, a sophomore from Northwest Mississippi Community College, made a notable debut at the College National Finals Rodeo on Monday, riding Wicked As out of Sankey Pro Rodeo stock to a score of 80.5.

Smith, who finished seventh overall last year after an injury cut his run short, said he is now healthier and more mentally prepared for the competition. “I just needed to get my mental (preparation) right and keep my body healthy. I’ve practiced all season for this,” he said, reflecting on his progress since last year’s event.

Last year, Smith entered the CNFR with limited experience but managed an 83.5 in his final ride, which qualified him for the short go. This year, he secured one of the top three spots in the Ozark Region with consistent performance throughout the season, earning an automatic bid to the finals.

In Casper, Smith broke a trend by successfully riding his bull on opening day, after all 10 riders before him failed. He described his ride as feeling good from the start, matching the bull’s timing and making a clean, five-second ride.

He expressed confidence about his chances for the rest of the week. “Come out here and ride the rest of ’em. That’s what I’ve been working for,” he said. Action continues in Casper early Monday, with Raegan Chance making her CNFR debut in barrel racing at 8 a.m. CDT and Will Collier competing in steer wrestling around noon Tuesday.
