East Mississippi Sweeps Doubleheader from Coahoma Softball
Clarksdale, Miss. — The Coahoma Community College Lady Tigers fell to East Mississippi Community College in both games of a doubleheader Wednesday. The Lady Tigers lost Game 1 10-4 and Game 2 9-7 after allowing a total of 30 hits, according to game summaries.
East Mississippi took control early in Game 1. Fralix doubled to score the first run in the opening inning. Price added an RBI single in the second to put the visitors ahead 2-0. Coahoma responded in the third when Zakathryn Cameron singled, driving in two runs. East Mississippi answered quickly, with Newburn hitting a two-run home run and Sturgeon adding her own to extend the lead to 7-2.
Coahoma pitcher Taylor Shingler allowed 10 runs on 14 hits over six innings, with no strikeouts or walks. Cameron led the Lady Tigers offensively, going 3 for 4 with three RBIs. Kaylee Ables added two hits, and Destiny Benefield drew two walks. The Lady Tigers finished with five walks in the game. East Mississippi finished with 14 hits; Newburn went 3 for 3 with three RBIs, and Sturgeon also drove in three runs.
In Game 2, East Mississippi built an early lead with Fralix singling to score one run, Stewart doubling in two runs, and Mitchell adding an RBI single. The Lions added two more runs in the third inning on RBI singles from Stewart and Earls. Coahoma pitcher Benefield allowed nine runs, eight earned, on 16 hits over six innings, striking out two without issuing a walk.
The Lady Tigers recorded 12 hits in the second game. Tykeria McCullum led with three hits, and both Ables and McCullum drove in two runs. Lazion Riley, Benefield, and Laney Wallace each had multiple hits. East Mississippi finished with 16 hits, with Stewart going 3 for 3 with three RBIs. Stewart and Newburn each had three hits, and the Lions stole six bases and turned three double plays. Coahoma is scheduled to host Southwest Mississippi on Saturday at 1 p.m.
