Belhaven Track & Field Opens CCS Championships with Wins and Qualifiers
JACKSON, Miss. — Belhaven University opened the CCS Track & Field Championships with a series of standout performances Tuesday. The Blazers secured event wins, qualified for finals, and posted personal bests across the board.
On the men’s side, Neal Terry claimed his third consecutive CCS long jump title with a leap of 7.19 meters. Alex Reed finished second with a jump of 7.00 meters. Terry, a senior, has placed in the top five in all four of his seasons at Belhaven.
In track events, freshman Kenneth Mills advanced to the 100-meter final with a prelim time of 11.00 seconds. Seth Haynes also qualified with a time of 11.50 seconds. Julius Phillips led the way in the 200 meters with a 22.62-second run, earning his spot in the final. Haynes (23.29), Leeson Taylor III (23.87), and Jaheem Cook (23.90) also competed in the event. Phillips later qualified for the 400 meters with a time of 51.22 seconds, with Taylor (52.84) and Cook (53.21) also posting qualifying times.
Belhaven had success in middle-distance events as well. Drew Duckworth secured a spot in the 800-meter final with a time of 2:02.45, building on his strong season. Jacob Turner (2:08.52) and Donovan Hurst (2:13.61) also competed for the Blazers.
On the women’s side, Kimona Haynes achieved a personal best in the 400 meters, running 54.80 seconds to qualify for the final. She also advanced in the 200 meters with a time of 25.92 seconds. Yasmyne McCann qualified for both the 100 and 200 meters, running 12.70 and 26.51 seconds, respectively. Courtney Adams moved into the 800-meter final with a time of 2:33.79, showing continued progress this season. Myisha Turner (2:44.81) and Destiny Griffin (3:14.29) also competed in middle-distance races.
McCann added points in the long jump, finishing sixth with a mark of 4.79 meters. The Blazers will compete in several finals Wednesday starting at 11 a.m., aiming for more medals. Updates on Belhaven athletics are available on social media.
