Belhaven’s Kimona Haynes, Neal Terry Qualify for NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Jackson, Miss. — Belhaven University track and field athletes Kimona Haynes and Neal Terry have qualified for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships set for May 21-23 in La Crosse, Wisconsin, according to the school.

Terry qualified in both the long jump and triple jump, while Haynes earned spots in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes. Terry will compete in the men’s long jump Thursday at 2:30 p.m. and the triple jump finals Saturday at 11 a.m. Haynes is scheduled for the 400-meter preliminaries Friday at 4:50 p.m. and the 200-meter preliminaries later that evening at 5:40 p.m.

The senior from Belhaven has posted record-breaking performances this season. He broke his own conference record in the long jump with a mark of 7.31 meters at the Rhodes 7-Way Meet and set a CCS record of 15.11 meters in the triple jump at the conference championships. His efforts earned him CCS Field Athlete of the Meet honors for the third consecutive year.

At last weekend’s Lee University Last Chance Meet, Terry won the long jump with a leap of 7.16 meters and finished second in the triple jump at 14.53 meters, competing against a field of Division II and nationally-ranked athletes. Throughout the season, he also posted jumps of 7.19 meters at the CCS Championships and 7.14 meters at the Belhaven Mid Week Challenge. In the triple jump, his marks include 14.86 meters at the Belhaven Mid Week Challenge and 14.47 meters at the Rhodes 7-Way Meet.

Terry’s achievements have made him one of the most decorated athletes in conference history. He holds the CCS record with nine career First Team All-Conference selections and has been ranked among Division III’s top jumpers this outdoor season.

Haynes, a senior, also had a standout year. She enters nationals with the sixth-fastest 400-meter time in Division III after running a personal best of 54.80 seconds at the CCS Championships. She also qualified in the 200 meters with a school-record and CCS-leading 24.26 seconds at the Belhaven Invitational, which ranks 14th nationally. Additionally, she posted the top 100-meter time in the CCS this season at 12.04 seconds.

At the Lee University Last Chance Meet, Haynes finished 10th in the 200 meters with a time of 24.54 seconds and seventh in the 400 meters at 56.21 seconds, competing against a deep field of Division II and NAIA athletes. Earlier this spring, she was named the CCS Women’s Track & Field Athlete of the Year for the second straight season. She holds CCS records for career First Team All-Conference selections with nine and overall all-conference honors with 15.
