Alcorn Track Competes at Day One of SWAC Championships in Baton Rouge
BATON ROUGE, La. — Alcorn State’s men’s and women’s track and field teams opened competition Sunday at the 2026 Southwestern Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships at A.W. Mumford Stadium, hosted by Southern University.
On the women’s side, Izayla Harris qualified for the 200-meter final with a time of 23.84 seconds, according to team officials. Teammate Sariah Magee set a personal best of 24.17 seconds. Taliya Spurlock finished 20th in the event with a time of 24.84 seconds, followed closely by Brianna Wilson at 24.90 seconds.
Sanaa Parker advanced to the 400-meter hurdles final after clocking 1:00.93. In the long jump, Taylar Brown posted a leap of 5.95 meters (19 feet, 6.25 inches), finishing fifth and setting a personal and team best for Alcorn. Kaylin White also competed in the event with a mark of 5.54 meters (18-2.25). Myah Knowles and Zoe Adderly jumped 4.84 meters and 4.67 meters, respectively.
Erin Barr completed the 1,500 meters in 5:17.69. Silvia Jepkorir finished sixth in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 42:32.30, in her first outdoor 10K appearance for the team.
For the men’s team, defending champion Derrick Williams qualified for the 200-meter final with a preliminary time of 20.99 seconds. Joe Coleman posted 21.67 seconds, while Beethoven Phanord finished in 21.76 seconds. In the 400-meter hurdles, Desmyn McCall ran 53.29 seconds to advance to the final, with Ethan Campbell finishing in 55.46 seconds.
Darrian Wells posted a time of 4:33.71 in the 1,500 meters prelims, just ahead of teammate Bryan Alvarez at 4:39.60. In the field events, Lauria McDuffey III finished 22nd in the long jump with a mark of 6.45 meters (21-2).
Team standings saw Southern (La.) leading the women’s competition with 37.5 points. Alabama A&M and Bethune-Cookman tied for second with 18 points each. On the men’s side, Jackson State leads with 34 points, followed by Bethune-Cookman with 31 and Texas Southern with 19. Day two of the championships begins at 9:30 a.m. CDT with the decathlon 110-meter hurdles. The final day, May 12, will be streamed live on SWAC TV starting at 5 p.m. CDT, featuring the women’s 4×100-meter relay.
