Alcorn State Wins Three Gold Medals at SWAC Outdoor Championships
BATON ROUGE, La. — Alcorn State University won three gold medals at the 2026 Southwestern Athletic Conference outdoor track and field championships, held Tuesday at Southern University’s A.W. Mumford Stadium.
On the men’s side, sophomore Jadan Miller from Gulfport, Mississippi, claimed first in the discus throw with a distance of 51.05 meters (167 feet, 6 inches). Miller, who finished seventh last year, earned his first conference gold. He also finished fourth in the shot put with a mark of 15.43 meters (50 feet, 7.5 inches).
Later in the evening, Derrick Williams, a sophomore from West Palm Beach, Florida, won both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Williams clocked a personal-best 10.17 seconds in the 100 meters, finishing third in preliminaries before winning the final. His time ranks as the fourth-fastest among HBCU track athletes this season. He also won the 200 meters with a season-best 20.49 seconds, according to meet organizers.
“This is an amazing feeling,” Williams said after his races. “I am speechless. This is what you work every day for. To have the title in your hands is so special.”
Teammate Trellas Forrest finished second in the 400 meters with a season-low time of 46.02 seconds and helped the Braves secure third place in the 4×400 relay, finishing in 3:08.12. Forrest’s performance was crucial as he overtook competitors on the final turn. The relay team set a new school record in the process.
Alcorn’s men’s team also finished third in the 4×100 relay with a season-best 40.30 seconds. Jackson State won the men’s title with 142 points, followed by Texas Southern with 110 and Bethune-Cookman with 104.5. Alcorn placed sixth with 68 points.
On the women’s side, the 4×100 relay team of Brianna Wilson, Sariah Magee, Taliya Spurlock, and Rikki Gray set a school record with a time of 44.99 seconds, finishing second behind Florida A&M. The Rattlers won with 145.50 points, with Alabama State second at 132 points. Southern finished third with 95.5 points, and Alabama A&M was fourth with 93. Alcorn placed 11th with 26 points.
Freshman Izayla Harris from Doyline, Louisiana, finished fifth in the 200 meters in 23.85 seconds, marking her third-fastest outdoor time this season. Other notable performances included Silvia Jepkorir’s sixth-place finish in the 10,000 meters with a time of 42:32.30, and Taylar Brown’s season-high leap of 5.95 meters (19 feet, 6.25 inches) in the long jump.
Alabama A&M won the women’s team championship with 145.50 points, narrowly edging out Florida A&M, which finished second with 132 points. Southern placed third with 95.50 points, and Alabama State was fourth with 93 points. Alcorn’s women’s team finished 11th overall.
