Belhaven Volleyball Dominates Principia in Straight Sets

JACKSON, Miss. — Belhaven University’s volleyball team extended its winning streak to three matches with a straight-set victory over Principia College on Saturday inside Rugg Arena. The Blazers won 25-6, 25-13, 25-8, improving to 3-5 overall.

Belhaven hit .306 for the match, recording 31 kills and only nine errors, while holding Principia to six kills and a -.246 attack percentage. The Blazers also dominated from the service line, posting 20 aces from six different players.

The match began with Principia scoring the first point, but Belhaven quickly took control with an eight-point run behind five aces from Tarryn Woodall. The Blazers built early leads of 8-1 and continued to extend their advantage with scoring runs of four, six, and six points.

In the second set, Belhaven jumped out to a 7-3 lead and extended it to 12-3 with a five-point run featuring an ace from Angel Edwards. Principia made a late push, scoring five unanswered points, but Belhaven closed the set with a four-point run, including a block from Cami Davis and Laila Gauthier, to take the set 25-13.

The third set saw Belhaven pull away after a 6-3 lead, scoring eight straight points behind the serve of Megan LaCour. LaCour recorded two aces during the stretch, while Davis, Matthews, and Edwards each contributed kills. Maggie Joy Tomlin finished the match with four consecutive aces during a seven-point run that put the Blazers ahead 23-6. Matthews ended the match with a kill at set point.

Matthews led the team with six kills on eight attempts for a .750 hitting percentage. Goldie Lowe added five kills with a .444 percentage, and Davis contributed four kills at a .400 clip with three block assists. Ten different players recorded at least one kill. Tomlin dished out 13 assists and added four aces, while Edwards had 10 assists and three aces. Woodall led all players with seven aces, and Kayla Robinson tallied 14 digs and two aces.

Belhaven opens Collegiate Conference of the South play Friday at Covenant in Lookout Mountain, Georgia.
