JACKSON, Miss. — Belhaven University’s volleyball team lost a five-set match to Huntingdon College on Tuesday night inside Rugg Arena. The Hawks rallied after losing the first two sets to win 19-25, 22-25, 25-12, 26-24, 15-13, according to school officials.
The Blazers, who are 4-7 overall and 0-2 in the Collegiate Conference of the South, led much of the match but couldn’t close it out. Huntingdon improved to 3-6 and 1-1 in league play.
Belhaven broke open a close first set with five straight points, turning a 6-6 tie into an 11-6 lead. Kayla Robinson delivered two service aces during the run. The Blazers maintained the lead and secured the set with back-to-back kills from Goldie Lowe and Tarryn Woodall, finishing 25-19. The team hit .333 in the set, with 15 kills and three errors.
The second set was tightly contested, featuring six ties and two lead changes. Huntingdon took an 8-8 tie and pulled ahead with a four-point run. Belhaven responded, but the Hawks closed it out 25-22 after a kill from Salome De Jesus. The Blazers responded strongly in the third set, hitting .500 with 13 kills on 26 swings. Maggie Joy Tomlin served an ace during a five-point run that helped Belhaven to a 25-12 win.
The fourth set was evenly matched, with 10 ties and six lead changes. Belhaven led late, but Huntingdon forced a fifth set with a 26-24 victory. The Hawks carried momentum into the final set, scoring seven of the first eight points. Belhaven fought back with aces from Angel Edwards and clutch plays from Woodall, but Huntingdon secured the match on a final rally, winning 15-13.
Leading the Blazers offensively, Robinson finished with 20 kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Gauthier added 13 kills and three blocks, while Woodall contributed 11 kills and 11 digs for her second double-double of the season. Tomlin tallied 49 assists, and Robinson led all players with 27 digs. Belhaven hit .255 for the match, while Huntingdon finished at .232.
