MILLSAPS COLLEGE — The Millsaps College men’s soccer team extended its home winning streak Friday night with a 1-0 victory over Centenary College at Harper Davis Field.
The Majors outshot the Gents 24-14 overall and held an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Edward Steinwand made five saves to earn the shutout, according to school officials.
Reid Brenner, a freshman, scored the only goal of the match in the 46th minute, finishing with five shots, including two on target. Zachary Diamond, also a freshman, assisted on the goal and led Millsaps with six shots overall, two of which were on goal.
During the first half, Millsaps generated 14 shots and seven corner kicks but couldn’t find the back of the net. Brenner had a shot on frame early in the match, and the team pressed offensively throughout the half, with multiple players testing Centenary’s defense. Steinwand made key saves in the 29th and 30th minutes to keep the game scoreless.
In the second half, Brenner’s goal gave the Majors a lead they maintained through strong defensive efforts and timely saves by Steinwand, particularly in the 68th and 71st minutes. The Gents increased their physical play late but were unable to score, and Millsaps held on for the 1-0 win.
