Belhaven Edges Millsaps 1-0 in Riverside Soccer Match
Jackson, Mississippi — Belhaven University edged Millsaps College 1-0 in a men’s soccer game Tuesday at Belhaven Bowl Stadium. The contest was part of the Riverside Rumble, with Belhaven improving to 6-4-1 and Millsaps falling to 5-2-2, according to school officials.
The game was tightly contested, with Millsaps outshooting Belhaven 12-11 and holding a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Majors also led 10-4 in corner kicks. Freshman Zachary Diamond led Millsaps with two shots on goal, while juniors Alden Romano, Ellis Dykes, and freshman Reid Brenner each had one shot on target.
Belhaven opened the match with more offensive pressure, but Millsaps responded with early corner kicks in the ninth and 11th minutes. A shot by Raul Blandon in the 11th minute went over the net. Diamond had the team’s first shot on goal in the 14th minute, saved by Belhaven goalkeeper Justin Ramirez. The teams traded shots over the next 13 minutes before Belhaven scored the only goal of the game in the 36th minute. Diego Sarzalejo scored off a bicycle kick just below the crossbar, ending a program-record shutout streak for Millsaps goalkeeper Edward Steinwand.
Steinwand, who entered the match with five consecutive shutouts and a total of 485 minutes and seven seconds of scoreless soccer to start the season, stopped the only shot on goal he faced Tuesday. Millsaps’s final first-half attempt was blocked just before halftime.
Early in the second half, Diamond and Drew Mckeithen each had shots off target. Millsaps continued to press, with Dykes and Romano forcing saves and corners late in the game. Dykes nearly scored on a penalty kick with 8:16 remaining, but his shot was saved. The game ended with Belhaven maintaining its 1-0 lead, securing the victory.
