The Northwest Mississippi Community College women’s golf team finished fifth at the South District Preview at Cider Ridge Golf Club on Tuesday. The team improved their first-round score by four strokes and placed three players in the top 20, according to school officials.
Northwest was without Sarah Niblett, who sat out due to injury. She was replaced on the scoring team by freshman Elsa Lomas Castillo, who finished with a score of 84. The team totaled 54-over par for the tournament, narrowly trailing top teams Florida Gateway College and Snead State Community College, both at 110-over. Jefferson State placed second, while Snead State won at 76-over.
Freshman Graysa Enders led the team with a strong second round, posting an 80 and climbing seven spots on the leaderboard. She finished 11th overall with a 23-over score after 36 holes, just four strokes shy of the top five. Enders recorded three birdies and played the par-5 holes at one-over for the day.
Rylee Summerlin also had a notable performance, starting strong with three birdies in her first five holes. She finished the tournament tied for 15th at 28-over. Elizabeth Kilpatrick finished tied for 17th at 31-over, with her day marked by a nine on the par-5 fifth hole and a tough closing stretch on the final seven holes.
Castillo completed her lone round with an 84, ending at 12-over. She birdied two of the first five holes but struggled on the final holes, including an eight on the 16th. Sophomore Evalynn Ward finished the tournament at 46th place with a total score of 37-over, competing as an independent.
Northwest was the top Mississippi team in the field, finishing nine strokes ahead of Northeast Mississippi Community College. The team will compete next Monday and Tuesday at the Roane State Invitational in Harriman, Tennessee. The tournament will be hosted by Oak Ridge Country Club and is the second of three upcoming events, concluding with the Snead State Fall Invitational in Alabama on Oct. 12-13.
