Southeastern Louisiana Tops Alcorn in Midweek Baseball Game
HAMMOND, La. — Alcorn State’s baseball team lost 11-1 to Southeastern Louisiana in a nonconference game Wednesday night at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
The Braves (8-33) fell behind early after starter Garrett Oswald lasted less than a full inning, allowing two runs on three wild pitches before being replaced with two outs in the first inning. Myles Dews inherited a bases-loaded situation and allowed an unearned run on a wild pitch, extending the deficit to three runs.
Alcorn scored its only run in the fourth inning when right fielder Keaten Hawk reached on a hit-by-pitch, stole second, and later scored on a balk by Southeastern Louisiana pitcher Austin Minichino. Nico Garcia was caught stealing third to end the inning.
The Lions responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by a two-run double from Justin Williams. They added five more runs in the sixth, fueled by Williams’ two-RBI single and three unearned runs resulting from Alcorn errors.
Alex Perry led Southeastern Louisiana offensively, going 2-for-3 with a walk, a solo home run — his 12th of the season — and a double. He scored three runs and drove in another.
The Alcorn pitching staff struggled with command, issuing seven walks and seven wild pitches across six pitchers. Castro was responsible for three wild pitches before being replaced by Caden Wade in the fourth. Nick Gisclair earned the win in relief, tossing 1 1/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Dalton Gray finished with two hitless innings.
Alcorn’s hits came from Michael Bonelli, Chase Moore, and pinch hitter Chance Jackson, with Moore and Jackson each recording doubles.
The Braves will resume Southwestern Athletic Conference play Friday with a doubleheader against Grambling State, beginning at 1 p.m. The series was scheduled earlier but has been adjusted due to forecasted inclement weather in Mississippi. The games hold significant implications for next month’s conference tournament in Birmingham, Alabama.
