Raegan Chance Rides Into Contention at College National Finals Rodeo in Casper
CASPER, Wyo. — Raegan Chance moved into second place in the aggregate standings after her second-best run of the week at the College National Finals Rodeo on Tuesday night. The freshman barrel racer from Northwest Mississippi Community College in Mendenhall improved her time despite losing her reins of her horse, Sky, in the final stretch, according to organizers.
Chance and Sky posted a time of 13.94 seconds in the third go, which moved them into second place overall with a total of 41.85 seconds. They trail leader Devin Young of Texas A&M by 0.65 seconds, with two performances remaining before the final round Saturday night.
Chance expressed confidence heading into her final runs. “Honestly, just do what we always do. I mean go out there and go for it in the third round, just like we did in the first two and hope it works out. Just go out there and have fun, because this is just a great opportunity to be out here,” she said.
On Wednesday, Chance and Sky performed under the bright lights of the Ford Wyoming Center in front of a nearly full crowd. They waited their turn as the final duo of the night in the performance round. The pair circled the first barrel cleanly and maintained their pace through the remaining two, finishing with a strong run.
With two nights left, Chance and Sky are positioned to compete for a championship at the College National Finals Rodeo, which will be broadcast live on ESPN+ on Saturday at 8 p.m. CDT. Organizers said the team has done all they can to earn a shot at the title, alongside other competitors such as steer wrestler Will Collier and bull rider Dakota Smith.
