Ole Miss Men’s Golf Wins First SEC Championship in 41 Years

SEA ISLAND, Ga. — The University of Mississippi men’s golf team won the SEC Championship for the first time in 41 years Sunday, beating Florida 4-1 in the match play finals at Sea Island Golf Club.

The Rebels, ranked 12th nationally, secured their second SEC title in program history, with the 1984 team being the only other to win the conference championship. Ole Miss topped a field that included 11 of the top 25 teams and five of the top 10, according to the latest rankings.

Tom Fischer led the Rebels, earning a 5&4 victory to start the finals. He finished the week with a 3-0 record in match play and a top 20 finish in stroke play. Fischer was 6-under on the day, sinking a wedge shot to four feet on 14 to clinch his match.

Cohen Trolio added a key point, birdieing holes seven through 10 to take a three-up lead. He ultimately defeated Florida’s Matthew Kress 2&1, contributing to Ole Miss’s 2-0 lead. Cameron Tankersley secured the third point with a 1-up win over Parker Sands, capitalizing on a double bogey from Florida on the previous hole.

Tankersley and Trolio each finished the tournament 3-0 in match play. The Rebels also had a tie match between Cohen Trolio and Daniel Tolf, and another that ended in a 19-hole tie between Luke Poulter of Florida and Ole Miss’s Daniel Tolf.

Ole Miss finished with 70 birdies in the tournament, led by Trolio’s 20. He posted strong individual stats, including an average of 2.73 on par-3s and 3.69 on par-4s. The team now shifts focus to the NCAA Regionals, starting May 18.
