Northwest Mississippi Rodeo Finishes Third at Pearl River Event

The Northwest Mississippi Community College rodeo team finished third at Pearl River, tying their best season result, according to team officials. The team scored 355 points, finishing just ahead of Southern Arkansas University and East Mississippi Community College.

Dakota Smith led the team with an 85-point ride in the long go, securing the round win and nearly locking up his spot at the College National Final Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming, in June, the school said. Smith returned in the short go with a 76-point ride, which, despite being the lowest of the round, earned him the average title with a total of 161 points. His performance pushed him to second place regionally, with a 360-point lead over fourth place and trailing the top spot by 155 points, the school added.

Tate Williams also had a strong showing in calf roping, finishing second in the average after two runs. His first run of 12.4 seconds placed fourth, and he posted the fastest time in the short go, tying his calf in 10.4 seconds for a two-run average of 22.8. Williams is now fifth in the region, just 45 points shy of third place and a spot in the College National Final Rodeo, according to team records.

In steer wrestling, Will Collier advanced to the short go with a 7.9-second run, placing tenth after his first attempt. He then posted the fastest time of 4.2 seconds in the second go, moving into second in the average with a combined time of 12.1 seconds. Collier gained 110 points for the week and is now fourth in the Ozark Region standings, just 40 points behind third, with three rodeos remaining, the team said. Brayden Mahon also performed well, tying for fifth with a 6.3-second run and catching his second steer in 7.3 seconds. His 13.6-second average earned him fourth place and kept him in second in the regional standings.

Two team roping competitors, Tucker Douglas and Cole McCorkle, made it back to the short go, finishing fourth with 30 points each. However, both failed to catch their steer in the second run. Douglas moved into seventh in the Ozark standings with 220 points, while McCorkle climbed to sixth. The team will next compete at the University of Tennessee at Martin from April 9-11, with only three rodeos remaining in the season, officials said.

Fans can follow the team’s progress through the school’s website and social media channels.
