CLINTON, Miss. — No. 10 Mississippi Christian University men’s soccer team finished its season opener with a 1-1 draw against Saint Leo University on Sunday at Robert P. Longabaugh Field. Both teams moved to 0-1-1 on the season after the match.
Saint Leo took the early lead in the eighth minute when Viktor Danielsson scored off an assist from Luis Gaitan. Despite pressure from Mississippi Christian, the Lions maintained their 1-0 advantage at halftime.
In the second half, the Choctaws increased their offensive efforts. Karim Gegg tested Saint Leo goalkeeper Vincent Fournier multiple times, and Gage Sorey nearly scored when his shot hit the woodwork. Mississippi Christian also had chances from the penalty spot, but Fournier kept the score at 1-0.
The equalizer came in the 79th minute when Brandon Reyes scored off an assist from Patton Francis. Neither team was able to score in the final 11 minutes, and the match ended in a draw.
Gegg led Mississippi Christian with six shots, three on goal. Reyes scored the team’s lone goal, earning two points, while Francis assisted. In goal, Elliot Duffy played all 90 minutes, recording one save.
Mississippi Christian is scheduled to return to action Friday when it hosts Eckerd College at 3:30 p.m. at Robert P. Longabaugh Field.
