Mississippi Christian Builds Chemistry During Fall Soccer Camp

CLINTON, Miss. — Mississippi Christian University’s men’s soccer team has begun fall camp with a focus on building a strong team culture and chemistry, following a successful previous season, according to sources. The team aims to continue its momentum by emphasizing hard work, relationship-building, and a team-first mindset.

Senior Gage Sorey and sophomore Alvaro Pena expressed optimism about the upcoming season. Sorey, a defender, said the team’s early days of preseason have boosted his confidence. “I’m pretty confident about us this year,” he said. “We have a lot of great guys coming in, and they’ll be pretty good this year.” Pena, a midfielder, highlighted the quality of the newcomers and the team’s overall cohesion. “We’ve got really good newcomers,” Pena said. “They’re really nice, and I think we can reach our goal this season.”

The team’s approach focuses on spending time together, competing, and cultivating the culture that contributed to last season’s success. Pena noted that players are encouraged to hang out and give their best at every practice. “Just be a group,” Pena said. “Hang out with the guys and give everything in practice. That’s what counts — just be in this group.”

Head coach Rafael Costa has emphasized the importance of a strong locker room environment. Sorey said this focus is vital for success, adding that working hard during practice translates to better performance in games. “One thing Coach Rafa keeps stressing is having a good locker room,” Sorey said. “It helps us through the season. If we work hard in practice, it shows in the games. That’s probably one of the biggest factors.”

With an experienced roster taking on leadership roles, team veterans are focused on setting standards and guiding younger players. Sorey said leadership begins with setting a daily example, while Pena highlighted the importance of mentoring freshmen. “Being a strong presence and making sure everyone’s on point,” Sorey said. “Helping the younger guys get comfortable is key for us.”

The team aims to replicate last season’s connected environment early in preseason, establishing a foundation of unity, intensity, and clarity of roles. With fall camp underway, Mississippi Christian is working toward another successful season rooted in strong leadership and team chemistry.
