Mississippi Christian Men’s Soccer Falls 2-1 to Florida Southern

Clinton, Miss. — Mississippi Christian University’s men’s soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to Florida Southern on Sunday at Robert P. Longabaugh Field. The Choctaws, now 1-2-1, scored late in the first half but could not overcome an early second-half goal by the Moccasins, who improved to 4-0-0 this season.

Florida Southern struck first less than two minutes into the match when Hector Oliver scored off an assist from Darcy Moffat at the 1:57 mark. The Blue and Gold responded with pressure, creating multiple chances before Harry McLean scored the equalizer at 27:42. Gage Sorey set up the goal, and McLean’s shot found the net for his lone goal of the match. MC goalkeeper Elliot Duffy made key saves in the first half to keep the score tied at 1-1.

In the second half, Florida Southern quickly regained the lead. Moffat scored at 51:57, assisted by Oliver, to put the Moccasins ahead 2-1. The Choctaws responded with a strong offensive stretch, earning two corner kicks and creating multiple scoring attempts. Patton Francis had two shots, including one saved by Florida Southern goalkeeper Ricardo Marques, but the equalizer eluded Mississippi Christian.

Duffy made his third save of the match in the 80th minute to deny Oliver and give the Choctaws a chance for a late equalizer. Gage Gegg had their final shot in the 85th minute, but Florida Southern held on for the victory. Gegg led Mississippi Christian with five shots, while McLean and Sorey contributed offensively. Duffy played all 90 minutes, finishing with three saves.

Mississippi Christian totaled 10 shots, with two on goal, while Florida Southern took 14 shots and five on frame. The Choctaws will open Gulf South Conference play Saturday, Sept. 12, hosting Union University at 3:30 p.m. at Robert P. Longabaugh Field.
