Delta State Men’s Soccer Beats Eckerd 3-0 in Pig Pickin’ Weekend
Cleveland, Miss. — The Delta State University men’s soccer team earned a 3-0 win over Eckerd College on Sunday morning at Delta Field. The victory marked the Statesmen’s first over a Sunshine State Conference opponent since 2017.
Delta State (2-1-1) controlled the match from the start, applying consistent pressure in the attacking third and limiting Eckerd’s chances. The Statesmen finished with 11 shots, including seven on goal, while holding the Tritons to just three shots on target.
The breakthrough came in the 30th minute when Ajay Stewart scored his first goal of the season, assisted by Tazjean Bird and Samuel Fitschen. Just over four minutes later, Lucas Crowley netted his first collegiate goal, set up again by Bird, giving Delta State a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Delta State extended its lead early in the second half when Justin Krampl scored in the 53rd minute off a pass from Mills Sheridan. In goal, Daniel Santema made three saves and recorded his third clean sheet of the season, playing all 90 minutes. The Delta State defense remained organized, fending off a late push from Eckerd (1-3-0) to preserve the shutout.
Tazjean Bird led the offense with two assists, while Stewart, Crowley, and Krampl each scored their first goals of the season. The team returns to action Wednesday at Christian Brothers University, with kickoff scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
