Mississippi State’s Josh Hubbard Makes History with Third Howell Trophy

PHILADELPHIA, Mississippi — Mississippi State’s Josh Hubbard has made history by becoming the first male player to win the Howell Trophy three times, according to the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. The award, named after Mississippi State legend Bailey Howell, is given annually to the state’s top college basketball player.

Hubbard’s third win extends Mississippi State’s streak of winning the trophy to eight of the last nine seasons. The honor is sponsored by the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and Pearl River Resort.

Since 2017-18, Hubbard has been among State players such as Quinndary Weatherspoon, Iverson Molinar, Reggie Perry, and Tolu Smith III who have earned the award. Hubbard is a three-time All-SEC selection and a two-time NABC All-District First Team honoree. Off the court, he received the 2026 Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup for leadership, character, and community service, and was honored with a Senate Resolution from Mississippi Senator Josh Harkins in March.

The Madison native has scored 1,947 career points, ranking fourth in State history, and is among the SEC’s top scorers after his junior season. He is also one of the few SEC players with multiple seasons of 640+ points and 100+ assists this century. Hubbard set a program record with 311 career three-pointers, tying him for ninth on the SEC all-time list.

Hubbard’s standout performances include a career-high 46 points against Auburn and 42 points versus Georgia last season. He and Bailey Howell are the only State players with multiple SEC games of 40+ points. Hubbard also actively engages in community efforts, founding The Josh Hubbard Showcase and partnering with Make-A-Wish Mississippi for the ‘Buckets for Wishes’ campaign, which has granted 11 wishes and raised over $75,000.

He has also volunteered at Children’s of Mississippi Hospital, donated food to local communities, and worked with state officials to promote school attendance. Hubbard’s efforts reflect his commitment to service, which has earned him recognition beyond the basketball court.
