Mississippi College Women’s Tennis Falls Short in GSC Championship

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Mississippi College’s women’s tennis team saw its historic undefeated season come to an end Saturday, falling 4-3 to West Florida in the Gulf South Conference Championship at the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center.

The loss ends the Choctaws’ 23-0 run and marks their first defeat of the season. They will learn their NCAA Division II tournament fate during the selection show May 4. Mississippi College opened the match strong, capturing the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead.

The Choctaws maintained composure early in singles, but West Florida responded with three consecutive wins to take a 3-1 lead. Facing elimination, Mississippi College rallied, with Rocio Martinez winning at No. 2 singles and Katharina Weber securing victory at No. 3 singles to tie the match at 3-3.

The final decision came on court four, where Anna Hudson pushed her match to a third set. Despite her effort, Hudson fell short, allowing West Florida to clinch the victory and its first GSC tournament title.

Although they fell short, Mississippi College’s performance reaffirmed its standing as a top team in the South Region. The team now awaits its NCAA tournament assignment, which could see them hosting early-round matches if seeded in the top two regions or traveling if seeded third or lower.

Looking ahead, the Choctaws plan to continue their postseason run and compete on the national stage, aiming to extend their successful 2026 campaign.
