Jackson State Tops Alcorn 9-1 in SWAC Baseball Series Opener

Jackson, Miss. — Jackson State’s Talmadge Davis threw a complete game, striking out a career-high 15 batters, as the Tigers beat Alcorn State 9-1 Saturday in a Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball game at Braddy Field.

Davis, a sophomore right-hander, allowed just one hit over nine innings. He improved to 2-2 this season, hitting two batters and not allowing an earned run. Davis retired 11 of the final 12 batters he faced.

Jackson State (20-23, 10-12 SWAC) broke open the game in the fourth inning, scoring three runs. Robert Tate Jr. delivered a two-run double in that frame, and Edwin Lemus Hudson Jr. added an RBI single to extend the lead to 5-0. Lemus Hudson finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

The Tigers added three more runs in the sixth, with RBI singles from Lemus Hudson and Diego Melendez, and a bases-loaded walk by Shemar Harris. They scored their final run in the eighth on an unearned run due to a throwing error by Alcorn relief pitcher Kayden Sutton.

Alcorn State (9-35, 3-18 SWAC) scored its only run in the fifth inning, on an unearned run following a throwing error by Jackson State’s shortstop. The Braves’ only hit was a double by Chase Moore in the sixth.

Alcorn starter Devin Kriley took the loss, falling to 0-7 after allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits in four innings. Sutton pitched the final four frames, giving up four runs (three earned).

The series continues Sunday at Braddy Field with a game scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
