Mississippi College’s Bailey Sets All-Time Strikeout Record in Win Over West Alabama
Livingston, Ala. — Mississippi College concluded its regular season Saturday with a 2-0 victory over West Alabama in the final game of a Gulf South Conference series at University Field.
Senior pitcher Camryn Bailey led the Choctaws with a dominant performance, tossing a complete-game one-hitter. She struck out six batters and allowed just one walk. Bailey’s sixth strikeout of the game, her 571st of her career, broke the program record previously held by Katie Waterbury, who recorded 567.
The game was scoreless through three innings before Mississippi College took the lead in the fourth. Blakely Gill hit a two-run home run to left field, scoring Shelby Samples and giving the Choctaws a 2-0 lead. Gill drove in both runs, and Mississippi College held on for the win.
Bailey retired 14 of the final 15 batters she faced and did not allow a runner past first base late in the game. The Choctaws recorded three hits in the contest, with Samples, Gill, and Morgan Lavergne each contributing one.
West Alabama’s Eleanor De Block (22-9) pitched all seven innings for the Tigers, allowing two runs on three hits. Mississippi College will face Montevallo in the opening round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament on Wednesday, May 6, at 3:30 p.m. in Oxford, Alabama.
