Delta State Women Rally in Second Half to Beat Saint Leo 3-2

SAINT LEO, Fla. — Delta State University’s women’s soccer team scored three goals in the second half to erase an early deficit and beat Saint Leo 3-2 in Thursday’s season opener at University Soccer Field.

The Lady Statesmen (1-0) trailed 1-0 at halftime after Saint Leo scored in the 30th minute. Delta State responded with three goals after the break, securing the victory.

Millie Congerton started the rally in the 58th minute, finishing off an assist from Mariela Dolan to tie the game at 1-1. Caroline Chandler put Delta State ahead in the 63rd minute with a goal assisted by Emma Earwood. Saint Leo responded with a penalty kick to level the score at 2-2, but Avery Allison scored the game-winner in the 84th minute, assisted by Chandler.

Delta State outshot Saint Leo 13-7 and held a commanding 18-3 edge in corner kicks, demonstrating sustained offensive pressure throughout the match. Kim Bircher played all 90 minutes in goal, making four saves and earning the win.

Chandler led offensively with a goal and an assist, earning three points. Congerton and Allison each scored once, while Dolan and Earwood contributed assists. The Lady Statesmen will continue their non-conference schedule Saturday against Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida.
