Delta State Women’s Soccer Edges West Alabama 2-1

Livingston, Ala. — The Delta State University women’s soccer team came from behind to defeat West Alabama 2-1 Wednesday night at the UWA Track and Soccer Complex.

The Lady Statesmen improved to 3-3-2 overall and 2-1-1 in Gulf South Conference play. West Alabama dropped to 1-6-0 overall and 0-4-0 in league games.

West Alabama scored first in the fourth minute when Bailee Fairley converted a pass from Tianna Klysh. Delta State responded less than eight minutes later, with Emma Earwood scoring in the 12th minute to tie the match at 1-1.

The score remained tied at halftime. Delta State outshot the Tigers 12-5 in the first half and earned five corner kicks. Goalkeeper Kim Bircher made four saves in the opening 45 minutes to keep the Lady Statesmen in the game.

Delta State took the lead in the 58th minute after West Alabama goalkeeper Yumari Hernandez saved attempts from Mariela Dolan and Ava Morin. Millie Webb then scored to put the Lady Statesmen ahead 2-1.

The Lady Statesmen defense held firm for the remainder of the match, limiting West Alabama to three second-half shots over 32 minutes. Bircher finished with four saves and earned her third win of the season.

Delta State finished with an 18-12 advantage in shots, including a 9-5 edge in shots on goal. The Lady Statesmen also led 8-6 in corner kicks. Webb’s goal was her second of the season, and Earwood scored her second as well.

The team returns to action Saturday at Delta Field for a conference matchup against the University of Montevallo Falcons.
