West Alabama beats Delta State 4-0 in men’s soccer

Livingston, Ala. — West Alabama defeated Delta State 4-0 in a Gulf South Conference men’s soccer match Wednesday night at the UWA Track and Soccer Complex.

The Statesmen (2-6-1, 0-3 Gulf South) held the Tigers scoreless for the first 25 minutes before West Alabama scored its first goal in the 26th minute. David Nunez found the net for his ninth goal of the season, assisted by Florian Laot.

West Alabama added a second goal before halftime when Daniele Ciarlesi scored off an assist from Nunez in the 39th minute. The Tigers took a 2-0 lead into the break. Delta State goalkeeper Daniel Santema made four saves in the match, two in each half, to keep the game within reach.

The Tigers extended their lead in the second half, with Oisin Griffin scoring his second goal of the season in the 62nd minute. Nunez added his second goal of the night in the 73rd minute, assisted by Jesper Bakli, to make it 4-0.

The Statesmen managed only one shot in the game, a blocked attempt by Matthew Nicklas in the first half. Delta State earned two corner kicks and committed nine fouls. West Alabama controlled possession 57 percent to 43 percent and outshot Delta State 15-1, including an 8-0 advantage in shots on goal.

West Alabama goalkeeper Dan Erez recorded the shutout without making a save. Delta State returns to action Saturday at home against Montevallo for Senior Day at Delta Field.
