Belhaven Soccer Ends Losing Streak With Victory Over Rhodes

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Belhaven University’s men’s soccer team defeated Rhodes 2-1 on Wednesday at Rhodes Soccer Field, marking its fourth consecutive win and its first victory over Rhodes since 2014, according to school officials.

The match was tied 0-0 at halftime, with both teams’ goalkeepers making two saves each. Justin Ramirez of Belhaven stopped shots from Matthew Sucato and Luke Grant, while Rhodes’ Henri Kettner saved attempts from Ciaran Colvin and CJ Koppeis.

Rhodes took the lead early in the second half, with Vincent Stephens scoring at 53:01. Belhaven responded quickly. Zachary Howard entered at the 59th minute and scored the equalizer at 60:52, assisted by Colvin. The Blazers continued to press, with Graham Harris forcing a save in the 64th minute and Courtland Williams testing Kettner again in the 74th.

The decisive goal came at 81:12, when Williams assisted Sarzalejo, who finished to give Belhaven its first lead of the game. Sarzalejo scored in Sunday’s win at Hendrix, making this his second straight match with a goal. The Blazers held off Rhodes’ late attack, with Ramirez making a key save with 1:19 remaining to secure the victory.

Statistically, the game was evenly matched, with both teams tallying 11 shots and five corner kicks. Belhaven held a slight edge in shots on goal, 7-6, and Ramirez finished with five saves. Howard and Sarzalejo scored for Belhaven, while Colvin and Williams earned assists.

Belhaven has outscored opponents 18-4 during its winning streak. The team returns home Saturday to face LaGrange in its conference opener at Belhaven Bowl Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m., according to school officials.
