Delta State Women’s Soccer Hosts Union and UAH in Home Opening Week
The Delta State University women’s soccer team will play its first home matches of the season at Delta Field this week. The Lady Statesmen open with a game against Union University on Tuesday at 1 p.m. and wrap up the weekend Saturday against UAH at 1 p.m., according to university athletics.
Delta State enters the week with a 1-3-1 record overall and an 0-1-0 mark in Gulf South Conference play. The team lost its conference opener 3-2 at Valdosta State last Saturday, the school said. The Lady Statesmen have only lost once in conference play over the past two seasons at Delta Field, holding a 4-1-6 record under coach Chloe Kane.
The team’s top attackers include Caroline Chandler and Emma Earwood, both from Tupelo. Chandler leads with five points on two goals and an assist, while Earwood has four points with a goal and two assists. In their last game, Evie Shepherd scored her first collegiate goal on a corner kick, and Earwood scored her first of the season off an assist by Millie Webb, but Delta State fell 3-2.
Goalkeeper Kim Bircher, a senior, has made 23 saves this season with a .742 save percentage, making her one of the Gulf South Conference’s top goalkeepers. Redshirt sophomore Piper Burgess also has 18 saves and recorded a clean sheet this season.
Union University, with a 0-3-1 record, is looking for its first win of the season. The Lady Bulldogs tied Mississippi Christian 2-2 last Saturday. Rebekah Jackson has scored six points in the past two games for Union, and defender Irene Arias has played the most minutes on the back line. Goalkeeper Antia Lopez Rodriguez has 16 saves with a .696 save percentage this season.
Meanwhile, UAH, with a 3-2-0 record, is 1-0-0 in conference play. The Chargers recently defeated West Alabama 1-0 with a goal from Prescott Hull, the team’s leading scorer. The Chargers will host Trevecca Nazarene before traveling to Cleveland for Saturday’s game. Senior goalkeeper CeCe Szopa has a 3-1 record, with 21 saves and two shutouts, according to UAH athletics.
