Brown’s six TDs keep Petal perfect; Jackson Prep ends JA’s unbeaten run
Petal needed a spectacular night from Acely Brown and a late defensive stand to keep its unbeaten season alive. Jackson Prep needed a rivalry win to change its position in the district race. Both got what they needed Friday, October 2, as the Panthers escaped West Jones 49–45 and the Patriots handed Jackson Academy its first loss, 35–24.
The night also kept Tupelo, Lake Cormorant and Edwards unbeaten, but their results carried different weight: Tupelo finished another non-district test, while the Gators and the Ruleville Tigers opened league play with victories. The questions in our Friday preview now have answers, and several October races have their first meaningful separation.
Brown delivers, and Petal’s defense finishes
Brown produced 297 all-purpose yards and six touchdowns, according to Davis Wilson’s Hattiesburg American report. The junior running back supplied the scoring punch, but Petal still had to get the ball back. The Panthers outscored West Jones 14–0 in the fourth quarter, turning a game that had repeatedly punished their defense into their sixth victory without a loss.
Tate Myers contributed an interception during that fourth-quarter stand, Wilson reported. The combination mattered: Petal could keep scoring, but the comeback required West Jones to stop answering. The quarter-by-quarter box score records the Mustangs’ only scoreless period at the end. Petal now turns toward its October 9 home district game against Oak Grove with its perfect record intact.
Prep levels the district race; Tupelo stays unbeaten
Jackson Prep’s 35–24 win did more than spoil Jackson Academy’s unbeaten start. The Patriots and Raiders both finished the night 6–1 overall and 1–1 in district play, according to the updated matchup standings. Prep erased the difference between their league records in one evening, giving the rivalry result a consequence beyond the final score.
Turnovers helped make that happen. WLBT’s Friday-night report identified three turnovers as central to Prep’s victory. A game between two productive offenses ultimately left JA trying to recover from its first defeat, while Prep came away with the district win it needed to avoid falling further behind.
Tupelo’s answer to early trouble was emphatic. Eli Shannon’s kickoff-return touchdown answered Hartfield Academy’s opening score, and the Golden Wave built a 35–7 halftime lead on the way to a 49–7 victory. Drew Dean completed 10 of 13 passes for 201 yards and four touchdowns, while Tupelo held Hartfield to 97 yards of total offense, Mississippi Gridiron reported.
That combination of passing efficiency and defensive control left Tupelo 6–0 and Hartfield 3–3. The Golden Wave’s updated record remains entirely non-district: their league record is still 0–0. Friday strengthened the overall résumé without yet settling anything in the region standings.
District openers reward Oxford, Brandon, Edwards and Wesson
Oxford had considerably less room to spare than Tupelo. The Chargers edged Madison Central 31–28 to move to 5–1 overall and 1–0 in district play; the Jaguars fell to 2–4 and 0–1. Brandon reached the same 5–1 overall, 1–0 district position with a 34–14 win over Northwest Rankin. Both winners converted strong overall starts into a first league victory.
In the Delta, Edwards beat O’Bannon 24–6 in Ruleville, keeping the Tigers unbeaten at 5–0 and handing the Greenwaves their first defeat. Edwards is 1–0 in district play; O’Bannon is 5–1 overall and 0–1 in the district. Farther south, Wesson beat Enterprise of Brookhaven 47–6. The Cobras are 6–0 overall and also have their first district win, while Enterprise dropped to 4–2.
Booneville and Alcorn Central start league play with wins
Booneville kept its unbeaten start going at Kossuth, winning 44–22 to reach 5–0 overall and 1–0 in district play. Kossuth is 3–3 and 0–1. Alcorn Central also left its district opener with a win, beating Belmont 36–20. The Golden Bears are 4–2 overall and 1–0 in the district, giving Alcorn County a league-opening victory even as the Aggies absorbed a setback.
Walnut returned to an even record with a 36–14 win over Ashland, leaving the Wildcats 3–3. Smithville also reached 3–3 by beating Falkner 35–12; Falkner fell to 2–3. Baldwyn delivered the most decisive result in this local group, shutting out Biggersville 47–0 to improve to 4–2. Biggersville is 1–5.
DeSoto-area winners survive close finishes
Lake Cormorant protected its unbeaten record with a 27–23 win over South Panola. The Gators are 6–0 overall and 1–0 in district play, while the Tigers are 2–3 and 0–1. DeSoto Central needed overtime to get past Germantown, Tennessee, 27–26. The Jaguars improved to 4–1 in a non-district game, a narrow road success rather than a change to their league record.
PCS and Resurrection claim opening district wins
Presbyterian Christian defeated St. Patrick 35–17 in Hattiesburg, moving to 4–2 overall and 1–0 in district play. St. Patrick fell to 3–3 and 0–1. In Pascagoula, Resurrection Catholic beat Richton 14–6 for its first reported victory of the season and a 1–0 district start. The lower score produced the same useful result in the standings: an opening league win.
