JA–Prep rivalry and unbeaten showdowns headline Mississippi’s Friday night

Friday, October 2, 2026: District openers, a familiar MAIS rivalry and several unbeaten teams give Mississippi fans plenty to follow, from Flowood to the Delta.

Jackson Academy arrives at Jackson Prep on Friday with six wins, a district victory already in hand and a chance to make an old rival’s route through October considerably harder. Prep has lost only once, but that loss came in district play. Another would leave the Patriots chasing from 0-2.

Elsewhere, the questions are just as specific. Can Lake Cormorant’s defense keep a revived South Panola offense quiet? Can Hartfield make unbeaten Tupelo play a close game? And which perfect record survives when O’Bannon visits Edwards in Ruleville? Those matchups lead a Friday slate that also sends 5-0 Petal to West Jones and opens region play for several small-school contenders.

JA at Prep: more than rivalry bragging rights

Jackson Academy (6-0) and Jackson Prep (5-1) meet at 7 p.m. with different district needs. The Raiders are 1-0 after beating Hartfield 24-14; Prep is 0-1 after a 28-25 loss to Madison-Ridgeland Academy. A Prep victory would pull the rivals level at 1-1. A JA victory would send the Raiders to 2-0 and the Patriots to 0-2.

Both offenses have the production to make this a demanding night for the defensive fronts. JA is averaging 41 points and Prep 41.7. In MaxPreps’ reported season statistics, Aaric Beasley averages 173.5 rushing yards for the Raiders and Wade Smith 155.5 for the Patriots. Those two backs give the game an obvious place to start: which defense can force the other offense away from its most productive runner?

JA’s defense has posted three shutouts, most recently in a 49-0 win at St. Joseph Catholic. Prep answered its MRA loss by beating Cathedral 56-6. Last year’s rivalry game went to JA, 16-7, and Robert Wilson’s Mississippi Scoreboard preview notes that it was the Raiders’ first win over Prep since 2020. The recent history and the current standings both give the Patriots something substantial to change.

Tupelo brings five emphatic wins to Hartfield

Tupelo (5-0) has outscored its opponents 219-57, winning every game by at least 24 points. The latest result was a 34-6 win at West Point. Hartfield Academy (3-2) gets its opportunity at 7 p.m. in Flowood after ending a two-game skid with a 38-21 victory over Pillow Academy.

Tupelo’s balance is the problem for the Hawks: its reported averages are 188.8 passing yards and 173.2 rushing yards per game. Drew Dean has 11 reported touchdown passes, extending the passing threat that emerged in his opening-night performance against Brandon, covered in our September 4 preview. Loading up against the run has consequences.

Hartfield has a quarterback who can challenge a defense in both ways, too. Ethan Elliott has run for 463 yards and seven touchdowns and thrown for 587 yards, figures also reported in Wilson’s October 1 preview. His ability to keep drives alive is a central matchup against a Tupelo team that has allowed only 57 points in five games. This is a non-district game, but it offers Hartfield a much tougher test immediately after getting back into the win column.

Lake Cormorant’s defense meets South Panola’s recovery

Lake Cormorant (5-0) has allowed just 21 points all season. Its past two opponents did not score at all: the Gators beat Horn Lake 17-0 and Southaven 20-0. That is the standard South Panola (2-2) must break in the teams’ Region 1-6A opener.

The Tigers have recovered from two opening losses by beating Clarksdale 38-6 and Horn Lake 49-13. DeSoto County News confirmed both teams’ September 25 wins, leaving Friday with a clean contrast: a defense coming off consecutive shutouts against an offense that has scored 87 points over its last two games. With both teams 0-0 in the region, the result carries an immediate standings consequence.

Kickoff note: The current MaxPreps listing says 6 p.m., while DeSoto County News’ September 26 schedule listed 7 p.m. Fans should confirm the time with the schools before leaving.

Petal and West Jones bring nine wins to one field

Petal (5-0) visits West Jones (4-1) at 7 p.m. with an unbeaten season to protect. The Panthers have scored at least 34 points in every game, including 42 in last week’s 42-28 win at Clinton. West Jones has won four straight since its opening loss to Laurel, most recently beating Wayne County 42-35.

The numbers point toward a game in which a defensive stop could be especially valuable. Petal is averaging 39 points; West Jones is averaging 36. Mustangs quarterback Tootie Lindsey has 14 reported touchdown passes. Against that production, Petal cannot count on another strong scoring night alone being enough. This is the last non-district game on each team’s schedule before region play begins October 9.

In the Delta, two unbeaten teams start over in the region

O’Bannon (5-0) at Edwards (4-0) is Friday’s cleanest unbeaten-versus-unbeaten matchup in this selection. The 7 p.m. game in Ruleville opens Region 3-3A play for both teams, so the winner gets a first region victory along with another week without a loss.

O’Bannon won its first four games by at least 28 points before surviving South Delta 14-12 last week. Edwards’ most recent reported game was a 34-20 win over Greenville on September 18, following consecutive shutouts of Gentry and West Tallahatchie. The Greenwaves have just had to win a tight game; the Tigers return after a week without a listed contest.

Around the state: region play changes the stakes

East Webster (5-0) at Kemper County (4-1), 7 p.m. The defending Class 2A champion begins Region 4-2A play against a Kemper County team that has scored at least 34 points every week. East Webster followed two shutouts with a 27-24 win at Caledonia; the Wildcats have won three straight, most recently 37-6 over Northeast Lauderdale. East Webster has allowed 51 points all season. Kemper County’s offense gives that defense an immediate region test.

Northwest Rankin (2-3) at Brandon (4-1), 7 p.m. Brandon has won four straight, including last week’s 38-31, double-overtime victory at Starkville. Tyson Robinson scored four touchdowns in that game, two in overtime, according to Mississippi Scoreboard’s report. Northwest Rankin has dropped two straight, but both teams enter this Region 3-7A opener 0-0. The Cougars get an immediate chance to change the direction of their season against a rival whose running back is coming off a decisive performance.

Madison Central (2-3) at Oxford (4-1), 7 p.m. Oxford rebounded from its loss at Tupelo with a 23-7 victory at Grenada. Madison Central lost 42-21 at Warren Central and has alternated a win and a loss over its past three games. The Region 2-7A opener asks whether Oxford can carry that defensive response into league play and whether the Jaguars can recover on the road.

Booneville (4-0) at Kossuth (3-2), 7 p.m. Kossuth’s three-game winning streak makes this Region 1-3A opener more competitive on recent form than the full records alone might suggest. The Aggies most recently won 35-21 at North Pontotoc. Booneville beat Ripley 31-21 behind Tony Ogden’s 155 rushing yards and three touchdowns, as Tippah Sports reported. The Blue Devils have scored at least 31 in every game. Kossuth, which went unbeaten in region play last fall, has held two of its past three opponents to 13 or fewer.

Enterprise-Brookhaven (4-1) at Wesson (5-0), 7 p.m. Wesson has allowed 28 points in five games and posted three shutouts. Enterprise has scored 75 points over its past two wins, beating Noxapater 40-26 and West Lincoln 35-6. That recent production meets a Wesson defense coming off consecutive shutouts as both teams begin Region 7-2A play.

St. Patrick (3-2) at Presbyterian Christian (3-2), 7 p.m. Both come off convincing wins: PCS beat Bay 35-7 and St. Patrick beat Resurrection Catholic 48-7. They open Region 8-3A play with identical listed records, although one of St. Patrick’s wins was a forfeit. PCS’s two losses came by a combined five points, including an overtime defeat to Seminary.

Richton (2-2) at Resurrection Catholic, 7 p.m. The Region 8-1A opener gives Resurrection a chance to find its first reported win. The Eagles lost 48-7 to St. Patrick last week; Richton beat that same opponent 27-20 on September 18. WDAM’s weather-related schedule update specifically kept this matchup and St. Patrick–PCS on Friday.

On the volleyball court: Pine Belt visits New Life

The evening also includes Pine Belt at New Life Christian Academy, a girls varsity volleyball match listed for 6:30 p.m. in Mendenhall. Pine Belt is 4-7 in reported results and New Life is 0-3. Pine Belt’s latest reported match was a 3-0 loss to Hattiesburg HomeSchool on September 28; New Life’s was a 3-1 loss to Jackson HomeSchool on September 10.

The teams are also scheduled to meet Monday at Pine Belt, giving this independent matchup a quick return date. Treat the records as incomplete reporting snapshots: Pine Belt has an unreported September 26 tournament entry. New Life has no reported result after September 10.

All times are Central. Records, statistics and schedules were checked before Friday’s games on October 2. This is a selected preview of 12 football games and one volleyball match, not a complete statewide schedule. Weather has already moved several Mississippi games to Thursday; consult school announcements for any further changes.
