Mississippi High School Football Scores, Sept. 11, 2026: Kosciusko Wins 2OT Thriller, Brookhaven Stuns Madison Central

KOSCIUSKO, Miss. — Two overtimes, 118 points and a 36-yard field goal that had no business splitting the uprights. If Week 3 of the Mississippi high school football season needed a signature, the Kosciusko Whippets supplied it Friday night.

Kosciusko outlasted Hernando 60-58 in double overtime at Autumn Ridge, the highest-scoring game on a statewide slate of nearly 150 contests. It was one of at least 22 games decided by a touchdown or less across Mississippi on Sept. 11 — a Friday that produced a one-point stunner in Madison, a top-10 collision in Vicksburg and 21 shutouts from the Delta to the Coast.

Kosciusko 60, Hernando 58 (2OT)

The Whippets had no business being in this one at halftime. Hernando, a 7A program making the long trip down from DeSoto County, scored early in each of the first two quarters and carried a 21-7 lead into the break.

Kosciusko scored on the first play of the second half, according to BreezyNews, and the night turned into a track meet. Hernando pushed ahead 37-27, then 44-34. The Whippets answered to within 44-41 and, with seconds left in regulation, tied it on a 36-yard field goal.

Both teams scored in the first overtime to make it 52-52. Hernando struck first in the second overtime to lead 58-52. Kosciusko answered with a touchdown and converted the decisive two-point try for the 60-58 final. BreezyNews named Caiden Wade and Braden Ray its players of the game.

Kosciusko improves to 3-0 and has now scored 161 points in three games. The Whippets entered the weekend No. 18 in the Mississippi Football Power Index; Hernando, which fell to 2-1, sat 52nd.

Brookhaven 45, Madison Central 44

The Panthers went to Madison and left with the best win of their season, surviving 45-44 against a Madison Central program that entered the night 30th in the MFPI — 13 spots ahead of them.

Brookhaven is now 3-0 with wins over Lawrence County (35-8), Franklin County (42-6) and the Jaguars. The Panthers have outscored opponents 122-58 and have not trailed in the standings since the opener. Madison Central drops to 1-2.

Warren Central 42, Germantown 35

The best matchup on paper delivered. Warren Central, ninth in the MFPI, went to Gluckstadt and knocked off fifth-ranked Germantown 42-35 to move to 3-0. The Mavericks are the highest-ranked 6A team in the state behind Terry and Canton, and Friday’s result gives them a marquee scalp before region play.

Germantown falls to 1-2 after a September that has included a three-point loss to Oak Grove and now a seven-point loss at home.

The top of the board holds — mostly

No. 1 Tupelo crossed the state line and handled Houston High School of Germantown, Tenn., 42-13 to move to 3-0. The Golden Wave, who opened the year with a star-studded 7A opener against Brandon and followed it with an interstate test against CPA, remain the only team in the MFPI’s top tier without a blemish.

No. 2 Poplarville stayed unbeaten with a 49-32 win over Hancock. No. 3 Starkville handled Meridian 42-24. No. 4 D’Iberville rolled Seminary 52-13. No. 6 Oxford beat New Hope 38-15. No. 8 Canton shut down Murrah 21-6. No. 12 Gulfport blanked Laurel 51-0 in the night’s most lopsided matchup between ranked programs.

No. 11 Pass Christian needed all four quarters, edging Presbyterian Christian 40-38. No. 15 Petal beat Columbia 34-25, No. 19 Brandon handled Clinton 30-18, No. 20 Lake Cormorant ran past Columbus 42-6 and No. 21 St. Martin beat Stone 45-14.

The exceptions: No. 16 Biloxi lost a three-point game to Picayune 34-31, No. 24 Louisville fell 29-22 to Louisiana power John Curtis Christian, and West Point — a program with a long championship pedigree — dropped to 0-3 with a 41-28 loss to Noxubee County.

One-possession football, everywhere

Beyond Brookhaven and Kosciusko, the margins were razor thin across every classification:

And then there was the Delta, where South Delta beat Leflore County 3-0 — the only game in Mississippi on Friday decided by a field goal and nothing else.

Defense traveled: 21 shutouts

Better than one in five completed games ended with a goose egg. Raleigh blanked Taylorsville 50-0, Gulfport shut out Laurel 51-0, Amite County beat Resurrection Catholic 52-0, Richland handled McLaurin 50-0 and Aberdeen ran past West Lowndes 48-0. Tupelo Christian Prep blanked Memphis’s Harding Academy 43-0, North Pontotoc beat Alcorn Central 42-0 and Lanier shut out Jim Hill 40-0 in a Jackson city matchup.

What it means for the rankings

The MFPI’s Week 2 board — the last validated run before Friday’s games, published Sept. 9 — had Tupelo (92.2) clear of Poplarville (89.5), Starkville (88.1) and D’Iberville (87.7). All four won. Germantown, fifth at 86.6, was the highest-ranked team in the state to lose.

The biggest movers are likely to come from the middle of the board. Brookhaven (43rd) beat a team ranked 13 spots higher on the road. Noxubee County (47th) beat West Point by 13. Water Valley, already the index’s largest riser after climbing 112 spots, followed with a 43-14 win over Coffeeville. Callaway, the largest faller at 130 spots, lost again, 28-6 to Grenada.
