A new destination for Mississippi high school football rankings has officially launched.
The Mississippi Football Power Index, or MFPI, is now live at MississippiFootballRankings.com, providing weekly computer-based rankings for high school football teams across Mississippi.
Unlike a traditional poll based primarily on votes or opinions, the Mississippi Football Power Index uses an explainable ranking formula designed to evaluate what teams have actually done on the field — and the quality of competition they have faced along the way.
The inaugural rankings include 225 MHSAA football teams and allow fans to view both the overall statewide rankings and individual classifications from 1A through 7A.

A New Way to Rank Mississippi High School Football Teams
The goal of the Mississippi Football Power Index is simple: create a consistent way to compare teams from every corner of the state.
The MFPI evaluates several factors, including game results, opponent-adjusted performance, strength of schedule, offensive production, defensive performance, recent form and additional ranking data. The system also takes the classification of opponents into account, meaning teams can receive additional credit for challenging stronger competition.
That provides another layer of context beyond simply looking at wins and losses.
A team that dominates a difficult schedule may be viewed differently from a team compiling a similar record against significantly weaker competition.
Likewise, the formula is designed so that running up the score has diminishing value. Extremely large margins are compressed rather than rewarded indefinitely, helping the rankings focus more on the quality of a team’s performance than simply the size of the final score.
The result is a weekly Mississippi high school football power ranking intended to become increasingly informative as teams play more games and schedules become interconnected.
Every MHSAA Classification Ranked
One of the biggest features of Mississippi Football Rankings is the ability to quickly switch between statewide rankings and individual MHSAA classifications.

Tupelo Opens 2026 at No. 1 in Mississippi Football Power Index
The first official 2026 Mississippi Football Power Index rankings were released Wednesday, September 2.
Tupelo opened the rankings as the No. 1 overall team in Mississippi, followed by Meridian, Germantown, Madison Central and Gulfport to complete the inaugural statewide Top 5.
Because Week 1 establishes the initial baseline, movement up and down the rankings will begin with subsequent updates as more results become available.
That movement could become one of the most interesting parts of the MFPI throughout the season.
A major win over a highly rated opponent could significantly improve not only the winning team’s profile but also influence strength-of-schedule calculations for teams connected to that opponent.
As the season progresses, the rankings should therefore become increasingly driven by the growing network of actual results across Mississippi high school football.
More Than Just a Top 10 Poll
MississippiFootballRankings.com was built to provide more information than a standard Top 10 or Top 25 poll.
Fans can examine each team’s:
Overall state ranking, MFPI rating, record, strength of schedule, offensive production, defensive production, classification and additional ranking components.
Individual team entries also provide an explanation of how different factors contributed to that team’s MFPI score.

The site’s official weekly cutoff is Wednesday at 1 p.m. Central Time, allowing completed games and available data to be incorporated into the next ranking cycle.
As additional games are played, fans will be able to follow teams rising and falling through the rankings based on their performance and the evolving strength of their schedules.
