Owls men’s soccer loses season opener to LaGrange, 6-0

The University of the Women’s soccer team suffered a 6-0 loss in its season opener at LaGrange College on Saturday. The Owls are 0-1-0, while the Panthers opened their season with a win, moving to 1-0-0.

Under first-year head coach Stewart Mena, the youthful Owls team was outshot 32-3 overall and 16-2 on goal. LaGrange led 2-0 at halftime before scoring four more goals in the second half to secure the victory.

Freshman goalkeepers combined for 10 saves. Will Rickman, who played the first half, made three saves, while Kenneth Starr made seven stops in the second half. The Owls’ three shot attempts all came in the first half, with senior Jordan Ware and newcomers Luis Correa and Drake Ballard each attempting one shot. Ware and Ballard’s shots were on target but saved by the Panthers’ goalkeeper.

The team will look to pick up its first win Monday at 11 a.m. when it hosts the University of the Ozarks at the Roger Short Soccer Complex. Mena, a former Ozarks assistant coach and player, took over the program after seven years on the Ozarks coaching staff.
