Mississippi Football Friday: Kosciusko Wins a 118-Point Double-OT Thriller, Wedgeworth Throws for 452

Kosciusko and Hernando needed two overtimes and 118 points to settle it. Hancock’s Justin Wedgeworth threw for 452 yards and lost. Warren Central’s Nash Morgan made Warren County history. And East Union threw a homecoming party. Here’s what mattered from Friday night in Mississippi.

Game of the Night: Kosciusko 60, Hernando 58 (2OT)

KOSCIUSKO — For 24 minutes, this looked like the night Hernando’s early-season steamroller simply kept rolling.

The Tigers arrived in Attala County having outscored their first two opponents 104-7, and they led the Whippets 21-7 at the break. It took Kosciusko another 24 minutes, two overtimes and a two-point conversion to prove the night belonged to somebody else.

Kosciusko scored on the first play of the second half, and from there both teams quietly agreed that defense was optional. Hernando pushed the margin back to 37-27. The Whippets answered. Hernando pushed again, to 44-34. The Whippets answered again, closing to 44-41 before a 36-yard field goal in the final seconds forced overtime at 44-44.

Both teams scored in the first extra period to make it 52-52. Hernando struck first in the second, taking a 58-52 lead. Kosciusko matched it with a touchdown of its own — then went for two, and got it.

Final: Whippets 60, Tigers 58. No game played anywhere in Mississippi on Friday produced more points.

Kosciusko moves to 3-0. Hernando falls to 2-1 and, even in defeat, still owns more points than any other DeSoto County team this season at 162 through three games.

Performance of the Night: Justin Wedgeworth, Hancock

The best individual performance in Mississippi on Friday came from a quarterback who lost.

Hancock senior Justin Wedgeworth completed 27 passes for 452 yards and four touchdowns at Poplarville in the WLOX Game of the Week — and still walked off the field on the wrong end of a 49-32 final. The Hornets moved to 3-0. The Hawks dropped to 1-2.

It is becoming a pattern for the 6-foot-2 senior. In his first varsity start back in Week 1, Wedgeworth threw for 563 yards against Stone, setting Hancock school records for single-game passing yards, total yards, completions and attempts. Hancock lost that one too, by a single possession.

Three games into his senior season, Wedgeworth leads the entire state of Mississippi in passing yardage: 75-of-118 for 1,153 yards, nine touchdowns and five interceptions, an average of 384.3 yards per game.

He has not been doing it alone. Senior receiver Aspen Farve is averaging 98.0 yards per game with five receiving touchdowns, senior tight end Aiden Harvanek is at 97.7 per game, and junior running back Majia Talley is averaging 82.0 receiving and 77.7 rushing yards a night.

Poplarville had an answer in senior back Tylan Keys, who is up to seven total touchdowns on the year, with sophomore Kayden Bradford leading the Hornets in rushing at 209 yards.

Milestone of the Night: Nash Morgan, Warren Central

Vicksburg’s Nash Morgan picked a big stage for a piece of history.

In No. 8 Warren Central’s 42-35 win at No. 5 Germantown — the highest-ranked matchup on the Mississippi board — the senior became the first player in Warren County history to record 30 career passing touchdowns and 30 career rushing touchdowns.

He added to both columns getting there. Morgan broke a 56-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and found Layton Lee from 11 yards out in the fourth, finishing with seven completions for 68 yards and a passing score. MaxPreps named him Player of the Game.

The Mississippi State commit entered this season with 4,088 career passing yards and 1,660 career rushing yards, and he is in his fourth year as Warren Central’s starter after quarterbacking the Vikings to the 2025 Class 6A state championship. They are 3-0.

Around him: Demby added an 8-yard touchdown run, Nick Lee handled the extra points, Edward Mazie blocked a Germantown conversion and Jamal Washington recovered a fumble. Germantown quarterback Langston Branson gave as good as he got — a 21-yard touchdown pass, a scoring throw to Newton and a 38-yard touchdown run — but the Mavericks could not hold on.

East Union Rules Homecoming

East Union turned its homecoming into a rout, handling Byers 48-14 in Blue Springs. Mississippi Sports was on the sideline for it.

The Upsets

Brookhaven 45, No. 15 Madison Central 44. One point. That is the entire story, and outside of Kosciusko it was the tightest finish in the state.

Noxubee County 41, No. 14 West Point 28. One of Mississippi’s signature rivalries went to the Tigers by 13.

John Curtis Christian 29, No. 12 Louisville 22. The Louisiana power came across the state line and got the Wildcats a week after Louisville cracked the top five for the first time this season.

Lewisburg, behind sophomore quarterback Kaysen Wiggins, rolled past Ripley 42-7 to move to 2-1 and stay unbeaten at home with 98 points in three games. Center Hill stayed perfect at 3-0 with a 19-12 win over MASAE, junior running back Trintin Martin averaging 129.5 rushing yards per game on the season. Olive Branch took the 72nd meeting with Horn Lake 17-12, pushing the series lead to 47-23-2.
