SEARCY, Ark. — Delta State University’s men’s soccer team opened the 2026 season with a 1-0 victory over Harding on Thursday night at the Stevens Soccer Complex.

The Statesmen (1-0-0) scored the game’s only goal early in the second half. Tazjean Bird found the net in the 52nd minute, tapping in a cross from Micah Soper from close range. It marked Bird’s first career goal and provided the winning score.

Delta State dominated much of the match, outshooting Harding 13-10 and placing eight shots on goal. The team was particularly aggressive in the second half, recording eight shots after halftime. In goal, Daniel Santema made four saves during the full 90 minutes to earn his first win of the season and his third career shutout.

Harding pressed for an equalizer in the second half, but Santema and the defense held firm. Both teams finished with six corner kicks. Delta State maintained a slight advantage in possession at 51 percent.

The victory gives the Statesmen a strong start to the season as they continue their road trip. They are scheduled to face Central Baptist College on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Arkansas.
