Delta Devils’ Fourth-Quarter Comeback Falls Short at Nicholls

Thibodaux, La. — Mississippi Valley State Football fell to Nicholls 44-10 Thursday night at Manning Field at John L. Guidry Stadium. The Colonels built a 37-0 halftime lead and extended it in the third quarter before the Delta Devils mounted a late rally.

Nicholls scored twice in the opening quarter and added 23 points in the second period. The Colonels’ offense totaled 515 yards, while MVSU finished with 228 yards of offense. The Delta Devils’ defense forced two turnovers, including a 95-yard interception return by Tyrell Johnson for their only touchdown of the game.

Johnson’s interception came early in the fourth quarter when Nicholls was threatening to score again. He returned the pick 95 yards for a touchdown, bringing the score to 44-7. Luka Sari added a 34-yard field goal later in the quarter, giving MVSU 10 unanswered points. The drive featured a 35-yard reception from quarterback Jordon Davis to Nicholas Buggs, the longest offensive play of the night for the Delta Devils.

On the ground, MVSU ran for 149 yards, led by Josh Brown with 62 yards on eight carries. Dezmond Ray added 49 yards, and Norman Taylor contributed 32 yards. Jaylen King led receivers with four catches for 27 yards. Defensively, Joel Queisser led with nine tackles, while Javieane Stevens recorded two sacks and four tackles for loss.

Special teams contributed with Dayvian Bluitt, who totaled 149 all-purpose yards. Punter Nicholas Stephens averaged 43.8 yards on six punts, with a long of 54 yards. Turnovers ultimately hurt the Delta Devils, allowing Nicholls to score 23 points following MVSU miscues.

Mississippi Valley State will continue its season on Saturday, Sept. 5, with a game against Sacramento State in Sacramento, California. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
