Huntsville, Ala. — Mississippi Valley State’s volleyball team wrapped up its play at the Betty Austin Invitational with three matches, showcasing competitive effort against conference opponents.
In the opener against South Carolina State, the Delta Devils took the first two sets, 25-17 and 25-20, before losing in five sets. Taylor Wooten led MVSU with a double-double, posting 13 kills and 11 digs, along with three service aces and two blocks. Aubrie Walker added 10 kills and nine digs, while Brooklyn Brunt contributed nine kills. Erin Mims dished out 36 assists and added nine digs, helping the team compile 61 digs and seven team blocks.
During their second match, MVSU fell in straight sets to Maryland Eastern Shore, 25-13, 25-20, and 25-14. Brunt and Moore each had five kills, and Madison Conley added four. Kameryn Browne distributed 16 assists, and Pinesette led the defense with 18 digs. Wooten contributed seven digs and two service aces.
In the final match of the tournament, the Delta Devils lost to Delaware State in three sets, 25-13, 25-20, and 25-20. The team improved offensive production each set, hitting .212 in the final frame. Walker led with nine kills and two blocks, while Brunt, Moore, and Wooten each added five kills. Mims and Browne both had 11 assists, and Hawkins led defensively with seven digs. Hannah St. Croix recorded the team’s only solo block, contributing to six team blocks overall.
Mississippi Valley State will return home to host a Tri-Match on Saturday, Sept. 5, at the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex. The team aims to build on its efforts as the season progresses.
