Alcorn State Track Athletes Trellas Forrest, Derrick Williams Qualify for NCAA East Regionals
Lorman, Miss. — Alcorn State University track athletes Trellas Forrest and Derrick Williams have qualified for the NCAA East Regional, scheduled for May 27-30 in Lexington, Kentucky, after competing at the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championships in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Forrest, a senior from Winona, Mississippi, won a silver medal in the 400-meter dash with a season-best time of 46.02 seconds. That performance earned him second place in the SWAC finals and secured his spot in the NCAA East rankings, where he is currently 45th.
Williams, a sophomore from West Palm Beach, Florida, earned gold medals in both the 100- and 200-meter finals. He clocked 10.17 seconds in the 100m and 20.49 seconds in the 200m, placing him 30th in the NCAA East rankings for both events.
Alcorn head coach Alonzo Banks praised both athletes for their mental toughness and consistency. “Our sport is very mental, and it’s individual first,” Banks said. “Forrest and Williams showed that they were ready. And they continue to lift this program year after year with their results. But the way they cheer for each other as well.”
The NCAA East Regional will be held at the University of Kentucky Outdoor Track and Field Facility, which features a nine-lane blue synthetic track, dual-directional runways for jumps, and ample space for throwing and jumping events. The facility also includes a practice track runway, making it one of the most advanced training sites in the nation.
