Southern Miss baseball team opens Sun Belt tournament after winning regular season title
The Southern Miss Golden Eagles will open the Sun Belt Conference tournament Wednesday at 4 p.m. at DABOS Park in Montgomery, Alabama. The team enters the event as the conference’s regular season champion, finishing with a 40-14 overall record and a 22-8 mark in league play.
Southern Miss will face the lowest remaining seed from Tuesday’s first-round matchups, which include No. 7 Louisiana, No. 10 Marshall, No. 9 Georgia State, and No. 8 Old Dominion. The Golden Eagles have posted an 11-2 record in three appearances at this tournament, winning titles in 2023 and 2024.
Heading into the tournament with a nine-game winning streak, Southern Miss has won 15 of its last 17 games. Last weekend, the team swept Georgia Southern in a three-game series, outscoring the Eagles 35-4. The team hit .402 over the weekend, with 12 doubles and eight home runs. Their pitching staff posted a 0.75 ERA, striking out 35 batters without issuing a walk, while holding opponents to a .165 batting average.
On Saturday, Southern Miss secured its 40th win of the season with an 11-0 victory in eight innings. It marked the second straight year the team reached 40 wins in the regular season and extended its streak to 10 consecutive seasons with at least 40 wins.
This will be the 44th conference tournament appearance for Southern Miss, which has compiled a 92-69 record across three leagues: the Metro Conference, Conference USA, and the Sun Belt. The team has advanced at least one win in 39 consecutive seasons.
Grayden Harris, the Sun Belt Pitcher of the Year with an 8-1 record, is scheduled to start Wednesday’s game for the Golden Eagles.
