Jackson State Claims Four Medals on Day Two of SWAC Outdoor Championships
BATON ROUGE, La. — Jackson State University athletes earned four medals on the second day of the SWAC Outdoor Championships. Kaiden Berry, Robert Salhab III, Collins Kibet, and Eric Lagat all reached the podium, helping the Tigers build a lead in the team standings.
Berry, a graduate transfer from Prairie View A&M and the reigning SWAC shot put champion, won his second consecutive gold medal in the event after a throw of 17.13 meters. Salhab, who finished ninth last year, added a silver medal with a throw of 16.32 meters.
Despite weather delays and schedule changes, Kibet claimed his first gold medal in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing in 9:41.74 — a personal best. The freshman from Eldoret, Kenya, previously earned silver in the 10,000 meters on Sunday. Lagat earned his first medal for Jackson State with a bronze, finishing in 9:55.87.
In the women’s 800-meter race, junior Kaylin Jackson finished fifth with a time of 2:13.75. Finals are scheduled for Tuesday night at 6:25 p.m., and the event will be streamed live on SWAC TV. Meanwhile, Conner Cooper and Lenasia Drummond completed their multi-events earlier, with Drummond finishing fifth in the heptathlon (4,008 points) and Cooper fifth in the decathlon (5,046 points). Drummond’s best event was the 100-meter hurdles, where she finished second in 14.63 seconds. Cooper’s top performance was in the 110-meter hurdles, with a time of 15.72 seconds.
After two days, the men’s team leads with 74 points, ahead of Bethune-Cookman with 44. The women are in fifth place, two points behind Bethune-Cookman.
