Jackson State Athletes Set School Record, Secure Multiple Medals at SWAC Championships
BATON ROUGE, La. — Jackson State’s track and field team wrapped up the first day of the SWAC Outdoor Championships with four podium finishes and several qualifiers for upcoming finals, according to school officials.
Senior Robert Salhab III set a new school record in the men’s hammer throw with a distance of 54.78 meters, earning a bronze medal. Freshman Malayna Mallory also reached the podium, finishing second in the women’s hammer throw with a personal best of 53.67 meters and earning a silver medal.
In the men’s 10,000 meters, Collins Kibet and Duncan Koima secured silver and bronze medals, respectively. Kibet finished in 32 minutes, 35.90 seconds, while Koima completed the race in 32:50.30.
Three distance runners advanced to the finals in the 1,500-meter race. Duncan Koima led the qualifiers with a first-place finish in 4:04.17. Fabian Campbell finished fourth in 4:10.75, and Godfrey Kimutai was sixth in 4:07.07. Joan Koech also qualified for the women’s 1,500 meters with a time of 4:59.06, and both finals are scheduled for Tuesday night.
Senior Sedgwrick Pitts Jr. qualified in the men’s 200-meter dash with a time of 21.08 seconds. He is set to compete in the finals Tuesday at 8 p.m. Competition resumes Wednesday morning at 10:30 with the men’s decathlon 110-meter hurdles.
