Alcorn Baseball’s Kanious Davis Selected for HBCU Swingman Classic
Alcorn State University will be represented at the fourth annual HBCU Swingman Classic presented by USA Baseball, as former Braves player Kanious Davis joins the event in Philadelphia. The game is scheduled for Friday, July 10, at Citizens Bank Park, with first pitch at 7 p.m. ET.
The event features a 50-man roster of top players from HBCUs nationwide. Selection was made by a committee including MLB Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr., MLB representatives, and professional scouts. Twenty-two players on the roster have previously participated in MLB’s elite development events, known as MLB Develops.
Davis, known as “Spanky,” finished last season with a .314 batting average, 36 runs, 43 hits, and a .401 slugging percentage. He played in 48 games for the Braves, starting 46. The Atlanta native also pitched, ending the season with a 3-5 record and a 7.96 ERA over 31.2 innings. Davis struck out 36 batters and held opponents to a .277 batting average against him.
The Swingman Classic features two teams named after MLB legends Jimmy Rollins and Rickie Weeks, who serve as team captains. Rollins, a 2007 National League MVP and Phillies Hall of Famer, is joined by coaches including Wes Chamberlain and Milt Thompson. Weeks is supported by coaches such as Marlon Anderson and Jemile Weeks.
MLB Network will broadcast the game exclusively, with Dave Sims calling the action alongside analyst Harold Reynolds. Griffey Jr. and Emily Haydel, granddaughter of Hank Aaron, will contribute to the broadcast. The event will also include pregame activities celebrating HBCU culture, with performances, recognition of the Divine Nine organizations, and more. Details on the festivities will be announced later.
