Alabama State beats Jackson State 3-2 in series opener; Saturday’s game moved to 1 p.m.
Jackson, Miss. — Talmadge Davis struck out a career-high 11 batters but couldn’t prevent Alabama State from winning the series opener, 3-2, at Braddy Field on Friday night. Davis, in his second loss of the season, pitched 5.1 innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs.
Relievers Kade Walker and Trae Burton held Alabama State in check late, with Walker working 2.2 innings and Burton finishing with a scoreless ninth. Davis’s performance marked a career high in strikeouts for the Jackson State sophomore.
At the plate, Robert Tate Jr. went 2-for-5 with a run scored, and Hederick Torres added two hits in four at-bats, also scoring a run. Alabama State struck early with Devin Chandler hitting a solo home run in the first inning, and the Hornets added a sacrifice fly in the fifth and a walk-driven RBI in the sixth.
Jackson State scored its first run in the seventh on an error by Alabama State, with Robert Tate Jr. scoring on the play. In the eighth, Isaac McClenty doubled home a run, narrowing the margin to 3-2, but the Tigers couldn’t complete the comeback.
