Jackson State Defeats Alabama A&M 6-0 in Softball Series Opener
Jackson State opened its series against Alabama A&M with a 6-0 victory Friday at the JSU Softball Field in Jackson. The Tigers improved to 20-18 overall and 12-5 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Jackson State scored early, with Jace Jackson hitting a solo home run in the first inning. The Tigers added two runs in the second on a double by Ariana Murillo and extended their lead to 5-0 with a two-run single from Brooklyn Morris in the fourth. An Alabama A&M error in the sixth inning allowed Jackson State to add an insurance run and close out the scoring.
Jackson State’s offense was led by Jackson, who finished with a home run, an RBI, a run scored, and two walks. Ka’Liyah Gipson went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, a walk, and a stolen base. Avelina McLean added a double and a run scored, while Morris drove in two runs. The team collected 10 hits overall.
Jorgina Gant pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing three hits, walking two, and striking out seven over seven innings to improve to 9-4. She kept Alabama A&M off balance, working out of a threat in the third inning and earning her second shutout of the season. Alabama A&M managed just three hits, with Grace Cruthis, Kali Austerman, and Destiny King each recording one.
Kaylee Tatum took the loss for Alabama A&M, allowing six runs on 10 hits in six innings. Jackson State will host its final home doubleheader of the season against Alabama A&M on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.
