Jackson State men’s tennis advances to SWAC semifinals with 4-0 win over Alcorn State

NEW ORLEANS — The Jackson State men’s tennis team blanked Alcorn State 4-0 in the first round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament Friday evening.

The Tigers took the doubles point with victories from Ching Chang Chiu and Chen Hung-Yu, who defeated Matthew Holl and Vicent Buigues 6-1. Fabrizio Fallas and Gokalp Ayar followed with a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles.

Ayar carried his momentum into singles play, winning 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4. Hung-Yu then secured the match for Jackson State with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles. Senior Jhoan Vaquero closed the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2, sending the Tigers to the semifinals.

Jackson State will face No. 2 seed Alabama State on Saturday at 2 p.m., with a spot in the SWAC championship on the line.
