Jackson State Men’s Tennis Advances to SWAC Semifinals with Win Over Alcorn
NEW ORLEANS — Jackson State’s men’s tennis team defeated Alcorn State 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday at City Park Tennis Center.
The Tigers secured the victory by winning the doubles point with straight-set wins in the first two matches. Ching Chang Chiu and Chen Hung-Yu defeated Alcorn’s Matthew Holl and Vicent Llobell Buigues 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, while Fabrizio Fallas and Gokalp Ayar topped Fabian Juarez and Sebastian Griffiths 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.
In singles play, Gokalp Ayar delivered the most commanding performance, defeating Jorge Prats Navarrete 6-0, 6-1 on court four. Chen Hung-Yu then beat Fabian Juarez 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6, and Jhoan Vaquero secured a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Matthew Holl to clinch the match for Jackson State.
The win improves Jackson State’s record to 8-12 this season, and the team advances to the SWAC Tournament semifinals. Alcorn State’s season concludes at 5-19, according to the school.
