Former Ole Miss head football coach Hugh Freeze has accepted the head coaching position with Liberty Universtiy, according to sources familiar with the hiring and confirmed by Jon Reed of Fox Sports Knoxville.
Freeze last was a head coach at Ole Miss, where he compiled a 39-25 record highlighted by a pair of wins over Alabama and a Sugar Bowl victory in 2016. He resigned from Ole Miss after the 2016 season amidst an NCAA investigation that resulted in a multi-year bowl ban for the Rebels.
Freeze had been tabbed to be the Offensive Coordinator for the Arizona Hotshots of the AAF, a first year professional football league.
The Flames of Liberty are a provisional NCAA FBS team that was an Independent in 2018 and they can be bowl eligible starting with the 2019 season.
Liberty, based in Lynchburg, Virginia and founded by Jerry Falwell, is the largest private non-profit university in the United States. They went 6-6 last season.
