Columbia, Ky. — Blue Mountain Christian Volleyball faced a challenging doubleheader Saturday at Biggers Sports Center, losing to Lindsey Wilson in four sets before falling to No. 10 Cumberlands.
The Volley Toppers (4-6) showed resilience, with a standout third-set performance against Lindsey Wilson and increased offensive efficiency against the ranked Patriots. In the first match, BMCU lost 25-18, 25-8, 13-25, 25-18.
After dropping the first two sets, BMCU responded strongly in the third, recording 10 kills and hitting .222 while limiting Lindsey Wilson to a .067 hitting percentage. The team won the set 25-13 but was unable to complete the comeback, losing the fourth 25-18.
Marissa Gerleman led the attack with eight kills, and Salice Speed added seven. Valeria Velez finished with five kills. The Volley Toppers also excelled from the service line, recording 12 aces compared to seven for Lindsey Wilson. Abbi Williams, Speed, and Sydney Tague each contributed three aces.
Defensively, Williams and Velez each posted 16 digs. Olivia Lewis led at the net with five blocks, with Mattie Hopper adding three. Tague dished out 14 assists, and Domino had 12.
The second match saw BMCU fall to Cumberlands, ranked No. 10 nationally, in three sets, 25-16, 25-20, 25-19. The team showed offensive improvement, with Speed leading the way with nine kills and 10 digs. Gerleman added six kills, and Lewis posted five on nine attempts with a .444 hitting percentage.
Hopper contributed four kills and five blocks, while Williams led the back row with 11 digs. Tague dished out 11 assists, and Domino added nine. The team finished with four aces and seven total blocks, maintaining competitiveness throughout both matches.
The Volley Toppers are set to host Freed-Hardeman in their first home match of the season Tuesday.
