The Delta State University women’s soccer team battled a nationally ranked opponent to a 1-1 draw Saturday at Delta Field. Montevallo, which receives votes in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, was the opponent.
Caroline Chandler scored her third goal of the season in the 84th minute, assisted by Emma Earwood. The Falcons responded just 42 seconds later with an equalizer to even the match at 1-1.
Despite being outshot 20-8, Delta State’s defense and goalkeeper Kim Bircher kept the Lady Statesmen in the game. Bircher recorded 10 saves, making several key stops throughout the match.
Montevalo dominated possession, holding a 61% advantage and earning 11 corner kicks. However, Delta State capitalized on a late second-half opportunity to secure the tie. Millie Jebb-Geer and Lola Cunningham anchored the back line, helping to withstand persistent pressure from the Falcons’ attack.
The Lady Statesmen return to Gulf South Conference play next weekend, traveling to Nashville to face Trevecca Nazarene University.
