Kim Bircher’s Career Day Leads Delta State to 0-0 Draw with Union

Delta State University women’s soccer team played to a 0-0 tie against Union University on Wednesday afternoon at Delta Field. The Lady Statesmen (1-3-2, 0-1-1 Gulf South Conference) relied on a stellar defensive effort, highlighted by goalkeeper Kim Bircher.

Bircher, a sophomore, recorded 15 saves in the match, tying for fifth all-time in program history for a single game. Her performance kept Union off the scoreboard despite sustained pressure throughout the contest. Union (0-3-2, 0-0-2 GSC) generated 23 shots, 15 of which were on target, and maintained a 60 percent possession advantage.

Delta State attempted to counter with 11 shots, four on goal, but was unable to find the net against Union goalkeeper Antia Lopez Rodriguez. Rodriguez made four saves in the match. Union created numerous opportunities, especially in the second half, with 15 shots after halftime. However, Bircher and the Delta State defense held firm, turning away several close-range attempts to preserve the clean sheet.

Offensively, the Lady Statesmen were led by Avery Hooker and Mariela Dolan, who combined for four shots. Kennedi Turner and Bryleigh Taylor each placed shots on goal. The team also threatened on set pieces, earning four corner kicks. Union held a 10-4 edge in corner kicks and pressed late, but Delta State’s organized defense ensured the draw.

Delta State will look to carry this defensive effort into their next game, as they host UAH at Delta Field on Saturday, continuing Gulf South Conference play.
